First Hijrah Foundation Respectfully requests that you discharge your responsibility in protesting with us in front of the Ethiopian Embassy. Our protest demonstration will take place on Thursday May 31st. at 9:00 am. Please spread the word. It is our Islamic duty to defend our brethren against the Ethiopian Government’s interference in the religious affairs of the Muslims by forcing the indoctrination of Ethiopian Muslims with the Ahbash sect and denying them to freely elect their leaders. We should also tell the world that Ethiopian Muslims are peace loving and expose the Ethiopian Government’s sinister intention in labeling Ethiopian Muslims as extremist.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
STATEMENT OF PROTEST
The First Hijrah Foundation, strongly condemns the massacre that took place in the Asasa town of Arsi zone, Oromia region. The senseless killing of innocent worshipers in a mosque is an unforgivable crime. After the Friday prayer on April 27th, seven worshipers, among which were a six year old boy and a new mother of twins, were killed, and many others wounded by security forces.
We ask what was the crime committed by these victims?? They were but innocent Muslims, peacefully resisting the unconstitutional interference by the government in their religious affairs. We at the First Hijrah Foundation fear the latest incident in Asasa to be a prelude to what is soon to come. We fear that the government will use brutal force to silence the millions of Ethiopian Muslims that are rightfully and peacefully resisting the blatant interference of the government in their religious affairs by appointing leaders of the “Majlis”, or supreme Council of Islamic Affairs. Through this appointment of leaders, the government is trying to forcefully indoctrinate the Muslims with the well-known extremist Ahbash ideology mainly imported from Lebanon.
Growing Muslim Activism and the Ethiopian State:
Accommodation or Repression?
By Jawar Mohammed*
Various narratives are being presented to explain the growing standoff between Muslim activists and the current Ethiopian regime. The activists accuse the state of discrimination and meddling in the internal activities of their faith by imposing an imported religious doctrine. The state blames the conflicts on ‘radicalization’ and a covert agitation by foreign-based elements. The regime is also accusing the opposition parties of exploiting religion for their political gains. The opposition attributes the rising tension to the regime’s use of religion as part of its divide and rule tactics.
Setting aside the question of which narrative is more plausible, I think there is an even more important question; what explains the growing political consciousness and activism of Muslim society today—a development that internal and external political entrepreneurs are competing to frame for its use within their own strategic objectives.
